PUHOI VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE FORCE

Although the lads at the Puhoi Volunteer Rural Fire Force come from all walks of life, one thing they have in common is real pride in their new uniforms. Which is no surprise: they've worked hard to earn them. The service started a year ago with nothing, so they had to fundraise to get most of the gear they needed. And while "the local public were really generous," says Chief Fire Officer, Russell Green, "we soon realised selling sausages just wasn't going to cut the mustard". They urgently needed regulation Level Two fire fighting equipment to help them step up to breathing apparatus training and gain recognised fire fighter status. So they applied for a grant from The Lion Foundation, which Russell reports has made a big difference. "Without it, I reckon we'd still be selling sausages."
