BMX riding has a very strong following in Kawerau. Partly because Sarah Walker (BMX world champion) grew up there, and partly thanks to their recently revamped BMX track. Until last year, the track was rundown, littered and the local kids were hardly using it, so the Lion Foundation pitched in with funding to help get it up to scratch. Project Co-ordinator Su Cammell says it’s made a huge difference. “Most kids have a bike here because Kawerau is flat, so this gets them involved in something. And they’re proud of it. They used to leave rubbish and broken glass lying around: now they look after it.” Which sounds like a great way to help kids stay on the straight and narrow.
