AUCKLAND COASTGUARD

Auckland Coastguard’s motto is ‘deeds not words’. And the 140-strong team of volunteers certainly does many good deeds, saving dozens of lives every year. However, with more boaties on the water these days (and new regulations inhibiting the use of members’ private boats), they desperately needed another dedicated rescue vessel. So when they had the chance to purchase Protector, the 19-metre Emirates Team New Zealand support tender, The Lion Foundation was keen to pitch in. General Manager, Duthie Lidgard, is thrilled with their new boat, “It’s such a big vessel it can carry a 3.8 metre jet boat, which really adds to its capabilities. It’s already been involved in several operations.” Which is exactly why we came to their rescue.
